When Natalie and I decided to start this segment of our blog titled “Mission Mondays” the ideas began pouring out of us.  Ways to give, charities to support, teaching our children, and lending a helping hand.   What I didn’t expect was the effect to trickle down to my kids.

Today I thought I’d share that quick conversation we had with our boys and Eli’s perspective on giving.

The conversation was started by Jesse looking for someone to mow our grass.  We had been out-of-town and the grass was getting tall.  Andrew and Eli overheard their father asking someone about taking on the job to mow our grass.  This sparked Andrew to ask when he could get a job like that to earn money.  He wanted to earn money so he could buy LOTS of video games.  Trying to be the “wise” parents we proceeded to tell Andrew that he would have other things to use his money for other than games.  Of course in our minds we were thinking:  college, car, insurance, gas, and saving.

This is where Eli added his input that was wise beyond his years.  He looked at his brother and said “Andrew, we don’t work to make money to waste, we work to make money to help others”.  *GASP*!!!  By George I think the boys onto something here!!!

Yes!  We are here to serve OTHERS, whether it be financially, with our time, services, food, clothing, your gifts or just words of encouragement… SERVE like Christ served.  This was the charge given to us:

“Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.” 1 Peter 4:10

I would like to encourage each of you to take a moment on this Mission Monday and serve someone with God’s love being His hands and His feet.

This picture is of Eli serving a lady named Tommie Dean Rawlins in the aftermath of the tornado that destroyed her home town in Alabama.  I can’t tell you how proud I was of my boys that week!  If you want your kids to have a servents heart then teach them by your own actions.  There is no greater lesson to be taught than serving God and serving others.
