Green Does A Body GOOD!

Joy and I are really excited to share with you guys that we are teaming up with Apartment Guide to bring you a few tips for growing vegetables and flowers.  Whether you are living in a home or an apartment, we’ve got some great ideas that will leave you all with fresh fruit, vegetables and beautiful flowers for your window sill or your dinner table for the whole summer long!

No matter what your space, everyone can enjoy the bounties of growing something green…   My family and I have been planting a garden for almost 10 years now.  Growing things have been something we have done together as a family and just loved every minute of it!   From inside plants to a garden outside…

I enjoy a little 15′ x 20′ garden in my back yard while Joy does best with tomatoes in planters on her back porch.  Unfortunately, Joys got garden eating animals…  Fortunately, Joy gets to enjoy deer in her back yard!  Some of you might even find yourself limited to a window…  but have no fear!  There is great pleasure in  throwing in your favorite herbs into your dish picked straight from your window planters!  With just the right amount of sun, you can grow an array of herbs right there on your window sill.  And, here is some great tips for growing an inside spice garden.  And there is just something about bringing the outside in, that does the soul some good.

Here, in the south every turn seems to greet you with a fresh turned plot of black dirt and a few plots already doted with rows of green and young shoots of corn!  And your just not southern unless you have something green growing inside…  I LOVE this time of year!  The planning, planting and caring for the flowers and the garden.  I don’t know who enjoys it more, me or my kiddos!

Over the years, I have experimented with just about everything…  and learned that I do best with the basics in a garden!  The first that goes in the earth is our potatoes.  This has been one of my kiddos favorite thing to plant, digging for “dinosaur eggs” has been a favorite among the vegetables!  We usually do a mix of red and yellow onions, red for our salads and yellow for our burgers and hot dogs.  Then of course, carrots!  These are probably my favorite.  And, I think I have tried every tomato from big boys to heirlooms.  But, we fill the garden full of grape tomatoes and sweet 100′s, for an outside snack.  Then there are herbs…  I LOVE herbs!  Actually I have this love hate relationship with my herbs.  I fell for the ole’ minterooskie and he’s just about taken over everything!  I see his little green head poking out from every corner of my garden.  I adore his sweet aroma, but detest his wandering ways.

If you are limited on space, I would think about what you really love to eat and choose your vegetable from there.  I am hooked on fresh salsa…  So, this year I am devoting a good area to cilantro, jalapeno, onions and tomatoes.  I have big plans for my salsa!  I am going to can up a ton for my sweet little family.  {my daughter has been known to drink salsa from the jar}

And HEY, gardens aren’t just for vegetables!  Half of my garden is full of transplanted flowers that I enjoy all spring and summer long.  I have one raised bed full of peonies I have collected over the years…  Amaryllis from sweet old ladies…  And onesies that I just had to try!

During the spring and summer I love to have blooming plants sitting inside the house.  It is so refreshing.  Check out this great list of indoor plants to grow.  If you have trouble growing things, lack a green thumb.  Here, is a great article on growing the perfect indoor plants, especially if you find yourself limited on space.

So, no matter your location…  whether you live in a home or a precious little apartment, GROW something!  Whether its herbs or vegetables or beautiful dinner plate size flowers…  It does the body good!

And, if you’re ready for a whole new space or looking to move, Apartment Guide has the photos, floor plans, features and tips to help you find the perfect apartment community.

Hope you enjoyed the info and hope you feel the urge to go and GROW something!

Peace out!

Natalie
