How To Make A Drapery Rod out of 3/4 Galvanized Iron Pipe
I am ashamed to say that the rod holding the window panels in my little man’s room for the past 3 years has been a shower curtain-tension rod!  I know. But, I knew I would think of something groovy in due time, just didn’t think due time would be THREE years!  If Andy had to fix one more of my ever-changing ideas, he just might change me!  So, FINALLY… an idea!  Something cool, something groovy, something permanent, something industrial, something simple!   We had made a little “thingy” in the back yard for the kids to grab and swing from and I knew it was exactly what I wanted.
I got lucky enough to try out my idea, before making the final decision to install it into Will’s room.  My family has a new little cottage near the beach and new window treatments were needed!  Yoohoo!  Andy wasn’t to sure about my little idea, but I said, “take me to Lowe’s and TRUST me!”.
When we put it together and hung it up with these groovy window panels I had found at Tar-Jay… He LOVED it!  Everybody did!  It was just what I had wanted!  Will loved it and it was decided!
At the beach cottage we hung a pair of panels found at Target.   They looked great and the color was a beautiful, light, warm grey and looked awesome!  For Will’s room I found some window panels at a local fabric store and they worked great as well.  So excited!  Three years and I am a happy woman!
So, check it out:
All you will need to do is visit your local hardware store and pick up the following supplies.
2 – 90 degree street elbows for a 3/4″ pipe
2-  floor flange
3/4″ galvaniszed iron pipe {length will vary depending on your window}
Silver in color drywalss screws
A couple of things:
~ Unless a 6′, 8′ or 10′ long rod will work, you will need to go to a hardware store that is equipped to cutting and threading your pipe to your particular size.
~When working with the rod be sure to wipe it off before you begin.  It could be dirty or greasy and this could mess up your walls or panels.
~I found that the pipe comes in several different sizes.  I decided on the 3/4″ pipe.  It seemed to work best for my windows.  What ever you choose make sure you purchase the correct fittings.
~One of the things I like most about this rod was the idea of it being “fixed”.  So, keep this in mind when installing.  It won’t be as simple as unscrewing the end of a finial and changing out panels.
So, there it is… pretty-dawg-gone-groovy I think!  Simple, nothing major.  But really cute!  AND, my little man LOVED it!  Any questions or thoughts just leave them in the comment section of this post!  Thanks!
Sending out a little creative love,
